| Storm Products has signed an agreement |
Storm Products has signed an agreement with Bowling Rewards to use its marketing program for pro shops that carry its merchandise. The deal encourages independent pro shop operators to run the Bowling Rewards program in exchange for product incentives from Storm and Roto Grip.
Storm President Dave Symes sees this new alliance as a way of supporting "the brick and mortar pro shops in America and the 'imperativeness' of their prosperity." Added Bowling Rewards President Adam Miller: "Proper implementation of [our program] will move consumers to buy more products and drive pro shop loyalties."

| FIRST-TIME BOWLER MOVES INTO LEAD AT USBC OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS |
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.
- Prior to walking into the Albuquerque Convention Center this week, Brian Washington of Hopewell, Va., had never been to the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships and had no idea what to expect.
After nervously making his first trip down the tournament's traditional Center Aisle and struggling in team and doubles, the 28-year-old right-hander finally was able to calm down, and a big move on the approach helped him find his way to the top spot in Classified Singles on Thursday.
Washington shot 488 in team and was at the end of a 435 set in doubles when he decided to move eight boards left on the approach and completely change his line to the pocket. He then moved an additional two boards at the start of singles and posted games of 208, 191 and 277 for a 676 series. He struck on 10 of his last 11 shots to move past Tim Wagner of Hardin, Mont., who previously held the lead with 669.
"Yesterday was all nerves," said Washington, a record storage coordinator for the HCA healthcare network of Virginia. "My dad said once you get a frame or two out of the way, the nerves would go away, but since it was my first tournament, it took a few games. Today, I told myself to get out there and just bowl."
Although he competed in youth bowling leagues many years ago, Washington recently returned to the lanes after 16 years away because he wanted the chance to bowl with his father, Charles. That is the same reason he chose to make his USBC Open Championships debut this year.
"My dad has been bowling in this for more than 20 years, but I don't know how many more he'll be able to come to because of his health, and I really wanted to bowl in it with him at least once," said Washington, who finished his debut with a 1,599 all-events total. "I really had a great time, and the environment was a lot more comfortable because most of the people I bowled with here are from our league at home."

| Welcome to BCMMAG.COM |
Bowling Center Management is the industry’s leading business publication and official trade magazine of the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America. Started in 1995, Bowling Center Management, or “BCM” as it’s known in the industry, provides bowling center operators with revenue-generating articles, valuable advice columns from a collection of seasoned bowling business specialists and insider industry information each month.
The magazine is regarded throughout bowling as the quintessential “owner’s manual” for bowling center proprietorship.
BCM was created in 1995 under the leadership of Keith Hamilton and Mike Panozzo, owners of Luby Publishing, Inc. The company, which also publishes Bowlers Journal International and Billiards Digest, the two foremost bowling and billiards publications in the world, sought to provide bowling center proprietors with the industry’s only magazine devoted exclusively to bowling center operators. To this day, BCM still holds that distinction.
In 2005, BCM and its creators were honored with the BPAA Special Projects Award, recognizing the publication’s contributions to the industry. BCM has also collected dozens of awards in the annual American Bowling Congress/American Bowler Writing Competitions, receiving the most honors of any bowling business publication, including a record three awards in 2005.

| Barack Obama went bowling |

Barack Obama went bowling recently at Pleasant Valley Recreation Center in Altoona, Pa. -- supposedly to court the blue-collar vote in that state’s primary for his run at the U.S. Presidency. It may have backfired when his score was revealed: a puny 37, although, as Obama aides noted nudge, nudge it was only for seven frames.
The bowling outing may not have worked as well as Obama had hoped, but it became a major story line for bowling, especially when his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, challenged him to a bowl-off. “Winner take all,” she clarified. “I’ll even spot him two frames. And when this game is over, the American people will know, when that phone rings at 3 a.m., they’ll have a President who’s ready to bowl on Day One.” She mentioned all this on April Fool’s Day; nonetheless, the media drumbeat about Obama’s bowling misadventures went on from there, which although not exactly positive for Obama, had to be a good thing for the bowling business from a media perspective.
Another huge positive for bowling, but one often overlooked in this story: Obama is said to possess athletic skills in other sports, such as basketball, so his bowling ineptitude proves once again that bowling deserves much more respect as a sport that some would have you believe.
Pleasant Valley proprietor Robert A. DiVentura Jr. noted that Obama spent two hours at his center, while he only got a 45-minute heads up on the appearance.

| Bowling ball motion study |
One of the main findings of the two-year bowling ball motion study is that the major factor in how a ball reacts on a lane is the chemistry of its cover material. The study by representa-tives of the USBC and bowling ball manufacturers revealed that the covers of modern bowling balls can be constructed with ex-tremely aggressive, porous chemical materials, giving the balls the potential to easily gain traction and hook hard and sharp into the pins, despite heavy amounts of oil on the lane surface.
A USBC press release noted that, left unregulated, modern bowling balls could have a disproportionate impact on scoring relative to player skill in the sport. Accordingly, a new manufac-turing specification dealing with the porosity and chemistry of bowling ball surfaces has been introduced for implementation in April 2009.
The new specification will, for the first time, set precise limits on the gaps between microscopic indentations on the outer ball surface, or cover stock, because these gaps have the most impact on how aggressively a ball can hook on a lane.

| Success for B.E.R. (Bowling Event Rimini) |
The first edition of B.E.R. (Bowling Event Rimini) ended on March 16 at Rimini Fiera. The international trade show dedicated to bowling was organized by Rimini Fiera SpA and Facto Edizioni, with the support of the FISB (Italian Bowling Federation) and the EBPA (European Bowling Proprietors Association).
B.E.R. was held simultaneously with the 20th edition of ENADA Spring, one of Europe's leading expos in the coin-op sector, and the two trade shows were attended, over four days, by a total of 25,168 visitors (8.5% more than ENADA Spring 2007), of whom 2,569 were from abroad (a 5% increase).

|
Although not covering a huge amount of exhibit space, B.E.R. offered an almost complete, highly qualified showcase of the bowling trade, and its exhibitors included the world's major companies in this sector: QubicaAMF, Brunswick (taking part through its Italian distributor, Si-Line), Via Bowling (participating through its distributor for Spain, Portugal and France, Carlos M.M. Teófilo), Steltronic and Switch Entertainment.
Along with them, there were other lesser known companies, which are nevertheless important at European level, such as Germany's Karl Funk, Spain's Interbowling (distributor of South America's Kopp), Poland's Gemax, Ciccotti Group architecture studio and Abiprom from Milan.
Gabriella Zoni, Rimini Fiera project manager for B.E.R. and ENADA Spring, stated, "Considering that in the past a European trade show has never managed to take
|
|
off, B.E.R. was a challenge for us, but it's a challenge we think we have won, thanks also to the format of combining the two expos, which created important cooperation, reflecting the trend for interaction between bowling and amusement which continues to spread throughout the world."
Danilo Tosetto of Facto Edizioni added, "Since it was the first edition, B.E.R. also had the limits of a debut event. I'm referring in particular to the fact that, although sharing the idea of the project, some of the companies taking part chose to be wary and therefore opted for small booths. However, since at the end of the show they were satisfied with the event, I think there are excellent growth possibilities for B.E.R., and this is the objective we shall start working on immediately, with the 2009 edition of the expo in mind."
For 2009, the organizers also undertake to involve a larger number of companies in the consumer product and bowling accessory sectors, and to expand the seminar section. Two were featured at this first edition: one on the issue of biomechanics applied to bowling (organized by the FISB) and the other on the large Russian market (organized by the EBPA). These topics were extremely interesting and the speakers covered them in an authoritative manner.
Tosetto stresses: "We are convinced that many aspects contribute to the quality of a trade show. The names European Bowling Proprietors' Association and products showcased, of course, but also the ideas or considerations it creates and promotes by means of conferences and side events. This is because networking and information lead to greater professionalism among trade members. The direction we took this year seems to us to be the right one, so we shall continue to follow this road."

| Bowling in Russia as a lifestyle choice |

Phil Mison, EBPA Media
|
 |
Bowling in Russia as a lifestyle choice is seen very differently to traditional American centres for example. To Russians bowling is a form of entertainment to devote the whole evening to, or all night, like going to a nightclub. Muscovite facilities therefore need to be of a very high standard to attract the public. They are beautifully decorated and supplemented by different functional zones - cafes, sport bars, restaurants, slot machines, billiards, children's rooms and even cinemas. And this five star approach also comes at a price.
| Rates (on average in Moscow) |
Day |
Night |
| |
(until 6:00 pm) |
(after 6:00 pm) |
| Bowling (per hour) Monday - Friday |
€ 13.00 |
€ 24.00 |
| Weekends (per hour) |
€ 30.00 |
€ 30.00 |
| Shoe Rental |

Bowling is just part of the revenue stream, as all modern proprietors appreciate. In addition to a game zone there is a restaurant and a children's room, a Pro-shop and billiards, but the main emphasis is placed on bowling. Even hourly rates as high as 40 Euros per hour are not unheard of.
What are the returns? The proceeds from one lane amount to 45 thousand dollars a year. But as with any leisure empire, location is the key.
Centres raise further income by holding such additional events as business seminars and conferences. Some owners direct their attention to sports tournaments and "leagues", others - to corporate events (seminars, conferences, parties). As elsewhere in Europe in Russia it’s become fashionable/popular to have corporate parties in bowling-centers. In general corporate events in bowling-centers take place over the extended New Year holidays and lane reservation for that begins in August.
Russian bowling centers can be divided into two groups: bowling sites as stand alone buildings and centres incorporated within hotels or shopping malls.
Prime locations for stand-alone sites are at a premium in the big cities – just like Europe. Land shortage forced bowling center owners to seek new solutions. The ideal place became entertainment areas in large shopping malls. Developers aspire to involve in their projects large chain operators from the bowling industry as an ‘anchor’ tenant who will generate walk-in custom. Bowling has become the magnet for drawing in the public, and very successfully so.
Bowling is becoming more popular every year. What took 30 years in Europe to achieve we have done in ten. There is also a proliferation of major tournaments, TV coverage, trade shows and professional bowler clinics. As a sport in its own right Russian bowling has made great strides.
In 2001 the European Ten Pin Bowling Federation entrusted the Federation of Sports Bowling of Russia (FSBR) to hold the European Singles Cup, then the European Mens Championship (EMC 2005). And last November St Petersburg staged a magnificent 43-rd World Cup for QubicaAMF, seen by a huge TV audience on Eurosport, with live pictures produced via satellite by Phil Mison, the EBPA Media Director.
In 2006-2007 there were 25 official tournaments in the Federation of Sports Bowling of Russia a (FSBR) calendar. Besides this, Moscow bowling fans have shown high interest in the leagues in which nearly 2000 players have signed up.
Arkadiy Surenyan from his Moscow office also tells of another new significant investment sector for Russian bowling. The gambling industry in Russia has come under closer scrutiny and seen legislation tightened. Many gaming companies as a consequence seek new niche markets to invest their profits in a less ‘risky’ environment. One of these is the bowling business. Another positive trend for the Russian bowling industry.
Andrea Bisi heads up Brunswick’s operation for the territory from his base in Italy. He agrees trading inside Russia brings its own set of challenges. “Do not contemplate starting up any venture inside Russia without a local agent. There are problems to be overcome with import/export licences, insurance, customs clearance, permits, local councils, and much bureaucratic delay. You are looking at maybe 10,000,000 Euros of risk capital to build a 30-lane center in Moscow right now. You wouldn’t want to handle that without very strong local connections.”

| The "Lane Rover" |
A battery-powered, motorized carriage on wheels, called the "Lane Rover," won an Indiana engineer a $5,000 prize offered by USBC in a contest to design a friction-measuring device on a bowling lane. The "Lane Rover," designed by Gaetan Vich of Goshen, Ind., measures the coefficient of friction between two objects so as to insure that the lane surface - wood or synthetic complies with USBC standards for certified competition.
"Mr. Vich's design was the most practical idea submitted," said Paul Ridenour, USBC Research Engineer. "We will look to incorporate elements of his design into a new method of testing coefficient of friction bowling lanes or other related research and testing."

| BOWLING ROBOT TO BE FEATURED IN DISCOVERY CHANNEL CANADA STORY |
Segment on USBC's 'Harry' to air in late March
GREENDALE, Wis. - One worker at the United States Bowling Congress is about to become an international television star. He's not a famous bowler, coach or executive. In fact, he's not even human.
"Harry," the robotic bowling ball thrower used by the USBC to test bowling balls, is the subject of a Discovery Channel story scheduled to air later this month. The story is being produced by Discovery Channel Canada as a science and technology special and is scheduled to air on Discovery Channel affiliates in Europe, Australia, South America and Asia during "Inventor Week" March 24-29.
A film crew spent most of one day recently at the USBC Specifications and Certifications testing facility in suburban Milwaukee shooting footage for what will end up as a five-minute segment about how Harry is constructed and how he works with other USBC-patented technology such as the Computer Aided Tracking System.
"The story is going to look at specifically how Harry is used to test different bowling balls and how they perform differently," said the show's producer, Mark Stevenson.
The Discovery Channel story will show Harry throwing three different bowling balls (one urethane and two reactive resin) down Lane 1 at the USBC testing facility in Greendale, Wis., and the data being analyzed by the Computer Aided Tracking System (C.A.T.S.), a computer and sensor system that precisely tracks bowling ball location and speed as it travels down a lane. Viewers will see Harry's shots tracked by 23 electronic sensors positioned alongside the lane and the data transferred to a computer readout so the shots can be viewed on a lane grid. USBC Vice President - National Governing Body Neil Stremmel will then analyze the results of Harry's throws to reveal interesting information about how bowling balls with different cover stocks react on a lane.
One reason Stevenson became interested in pursuing this story, he said, is because it is very visual and he thinks viewers will be interested to learn more about how Harry works. Named in honor of former testing facility employee Harry Lawrence, the approximately seven-foot tall robot was developed by USBC and has been in use since 1999. Harry is a unique computer-controlled hybrid machine that combines hydraulics, air pressure and electronics to power a mechanical arm that delivers bowling balls to help test balls, lanes, pins and oil patterns. Harry is similar to the United States Golf Association's robotic golfer, "Iron Byron," whose mechanical arm swings golf clubs for research purposes in that sport. Harry, who can consistently duplicate shot after shot at ball speeds anywhere from 14-22 miles per hour and rev rates anywhere from 0-600 rpm, has two "hands" - a device with two clamps that grabs bowling balls. A piston and cylinder assembly makes the machine's hand open and close to pick up and release a ball. Springs and gravity provide forward momentum to propel a ball down the lane.
"It's visual and there is all kinds of interesting science going on," said Stevenson, who watched a video about Harry on bowl.com as part of his research. "Having seen that video, I could tell instantly that it would be interesting. A bowling robot is interesting in itself."
Stevenson said he didn't realize scientific research and testing is such a big part of USBC and the sport of bowling.
"That's why I think it's going to be interesting to average viewer," he said. "They'll be surprised and want to know more. That's a perfect impetus for the story."
Harry is one of the main players in USBC's bowling ball motion study. The goal of that study, started in 2005, is to gather data about the complex dynamics and inner motion characteristics of today's high-tech bowling balls. USBC is testing to determine how the different properties and characteristics of bowling balls act together, then use this and other information obtained in working with bowling ball manufacturers and other industry leaders to set performance-based specifications for bowling balls used in USBC-certified competition.
Results of the groundbreaking ball motion study will be released to the public in the near future.

| USBC TECHNOLOGY CONTEST CHAMPION CROWNED |
Engineer submits winning design for machine that measures friction of bowling lanes
GREENDALE, Wis. - An Indiana engineer is the winner of a United States Bowling Congress technology contest to design a device that will measure the amount of friction on a bowling lane. Testing the "coefficient of friction" of lane surfaces - the ratio of force between two objects - is important so that USBC can ensure that friction between bowling balls and the lane surface is within standards for USBC-certified competition.
Gaetan Vich of Goshen, Ind., an engineer at an automotive supply company in Elkhart, Ind., submitted the winning design as team "Science Friction" and took home the $5,000 first prize. The device Vich designed is called the "Lane Rover," a battery-powered, motorized carriage on four driving wheels. The force of friction is measured and calculated as the 13.5 inch-by-9.5 inch machine pulls a small sled over a wood or synthetic lane surface.
Vich said he became interested in entering the contest after reading an article on bowl.com and researching the specifications of bowling lanes.
"I am very excited, proud and happy," Vich said. "The idea of a contest was interesting. I wanted to see if I could come up with something good. I'm impressed with the extent of research in the sport of bowling."
"Mr. Vich's design was the most practical idea submitted," USBC Research Engineer Paul Ridenour said. "We will look to incorporate elements of his design into a new method of testing coefficient of friction of bowling lanes or other related research and testing."
USBC's objective through the contest was to tap into top engineering minds to explore the possibility of finding an even more streamlined and efficient way to test friction of bowling lane surfaces.
"This is an important test that USBC currently performs on wood and synthetic lanes," USBC Technical Director Neil Stremmel said. "The coefficient of friction is critical to ball motion on the lane. That is why we decided to issue a contest challenge to engineers and bowling technicians across the country. Sometimes you are just too close to a subject to be able to envision different ways to meet a design objective."
Eugene Lucas, a consulting mechanical design engineer with Hayward Engineering & Research Associates in Hayward, Calif., was runner-up in the competition and earned $2,000.

| BIRTHDAYS ARE SPECIAL |
I like birthdays. Especially mine. But, I like anyone’s birthday. I think birthdays are a special time and should be acknowledged and celebrated.
In the bowling business, birthday parties have become a HUGE part of our revenue stream, but perhaps more importantly, birthday parties have become one of our most effective bowler-recruitment and development tactics. Often, a birthday party is the first time a child ever goes bowling. Often a birthday party is the first time in many years that the parent bowls again. We regularly hear comments from parents like, “I used to go bowling all the time, I loved it.” Or, “I used to bowl in a league, I’m not sure why we quit.”
Bowling birthday parties must be SPECIAL events. A child turns nine only once in a lifetime. That 9th birthday must be the most memorable day of his/her life. At least until their 10th birthday.
For the parent, a birthday party can be extremely stressful. We all want the best for our kids. Our job, as party hosts, is to make certain that EVERYTHING goes smoothly for the parent. The less they have to worry about, the more they can enjoy the party and participate in their child’s joy.
Our job, as party hosts, is to make that birthday child feel like they are the most important person on the planet at that moment. Some bowling centers do a great job with bowling parties. Some are not-so-great. Many are terrible. I think we do a great job in our center, but I think we could be even better. We currently do about 250 parties-a-year. I think we should be doing 500. In our Texas center we were doing about 1,000 a year.
There are a lot of different thoughts about the “best” ways to run a bowling birthday party – by the hour vs. by the game; pricing per child or by a minimum of 8 or 10 kids at a set “group” price; including food or not; including a take-home souvenir or not; having a dedicated party host or not; and so on.
The important thing is to find a combination of party elements that works for your center, makes the party memorable and that you can execute flawlessly. Another thing to remember: You do not (and should not) limit yourself to children’s birthday parties. Teen parties and adult parties are huge opportunities for us. Birthday business is a large part of our income and will only get bigger in the future.
But, like anything worthwhile, doing it right requires a great deal of effort initially. There are a lot of resources available to help you design and execute the best birthday party program possible, starting right here with BowlingMarketing.com. VIP members can consult with us at any time. We’ll be happy to help with everything from advice to designing promotional materials. Non-VIP centers can purchase or Birthday Club promotion and, in a few months, our Birthday Party Manual.
Another excellent resource is Beth Standlee at http://www.trainertainment.net. Beth’s company is dedicated specifically to helping you develop your party business. Beth has first-hand experience in the bowling business and knows what works and what doesn’t. More importantly, she provides on-site training and tools for training your employees in how to better execute parties from start to finish. You can call Beth at 817-886-4840. Tell her I sent you.
